From The Wood

Using the “three varieties” of Landscape: “geography, autobiography and metaphor” (Adams, 1996: 14) From The Wood transforms the Photo-Essay (Rose, 2016: 341-347) into a meditative media artifact that explores the combination of Photography and the Japanese practice of ‘Shinrin-yoku’ (Forest Bathing).

The seasonal cycle of shedding, dormancy, and rejuvenation observed within the woodland, mirrors the mental process that can be experienced when going through a Depressive Episode. 

The backdrop of the Landscape provides the narrative, but by also engaging with it, the Landscape can provide guidance, inspiration, and the ability to ‘heal’ (Miyazaki, 2021: 21).
