I Prefer the Winter

An Illustrated Guided Walk

The fourteen photographs in this installation were documented over the summer months of 2022 and appeared in their originating location (Barnards Farm, Essex November 2022 - January 2024).

Serving as a metaphor for my Recurrent Depressive Disorder, including its physical symptoms, this body of work is a personal exploration, with the intention of better understanding and acceptance.

The fabric printed images, like the landscape, changed as they were exposed to the elements and the viewer was invited to reflect upon these changes as they walked and contemplated their surroundings.

"I saw my mental health reflected in the inevitable and changing seasons. Both the landscape and the life within it needed to adapt, so it could manage the seasonal challenges."

"Even the daily cycle revealed similarities; My very worst symptoms were mimicked in the meridian heat. Sunrise was the swell of an episode, and sunset the final burnout before the relief."
